Dora Lichtenstein passed away unexpectedly on January 25th, 2024. Dora was a beloved teacher, educator, and mentor at the SCHECK HILLEL Community School since joining in 2011. Dora was a lifelong teacher and fierce advocate for English as a Second Language (ESOL) programs.
Dora emigrated to the United States at the age of 8 in 1960 from Havana, Cuba. She quickly found herself in an unfamiliar country and unable to speak English. That experience along with her determination to help other students in similar situations guided her desire to fulfill her mission of teaching English to foreign born students.
When Dora passed away, the outpouring of love and support led us to set up a fund at the SCHECK HILLEL Community School in order to help fulfill her mission. All of the funds donated will be spent on scholarships, programs, teaching materials and other items specifically for the ESOL program at SCHECK HILLEL Community School.
In addition to her passion for teaching, Dora was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be missed so deeply by all who knew her and cherished her smile and warm spirit.
We miss you Mom!
